AAU Leadership Principles

Good leadership contributes to AAU continuing to be an attractive, responsible and sustainable workplace – humanly, professionally, and socially. This requires that you as a leader take responsibility and actively contribute to developing our leadership practice. Leadership at AAU, is something we succeed in together. The leadership principles help us create a shared understanding and direction for good leadership. The future calls for us to embrace leading together at AAU.

With five guiding principles, the leadership principles set the framework for a shared understanding of leadership at AAU. These principles provide direction in the work of leadership and serve as a starting point for reflection, dialogue and development.

The leadership principles are intended for everyone involved in leadership or the university's decision-making, operations and change processes. It is a shared framework designed to inspire and support the leadership we already practice – and to shape the leadership we want to realize in the future.

How to use the leadership principles in practice

Initiate the dialogue about the leadership principles in your leadership team

To help you work with the management principles locally in your leadership team, an easily accessible dialogue process has been developed, which you can include as an item on the agenda for leadership meetings and which you, as head of department, head of secretariat or deputy director, can facilitate yourself. The purpose of the process is to:

get your leadership team to reflect on your understanding of the guiding principles
translate them into your leadership context
set out specific actions on how you will work with the guiding principles in the leadership team

How to use the leadership principles in practice

The leadership principles are an active tool for you as a leader to strengthen and support good leadership at AAU. The leadership principles can be used in your daily leadership practice as a reference and framework. This applies in many specific situations, including:

as a framework for the daily leadership tasks in your team or department
in dialogues about leadership tasks and success criteria
as a framework for aligning expectations with and evaluating leaders
as a basis for ongoing leadership development interviews (LUS) (updated LUS material will be available in 2025)
as a basis for recruiting and onboarding new leaders
as a starting point for development initiatives for individual leaders and leadership teams
as support for new leadership teams in establishing a common foundation for collaboration
in leadership groups, leadership forums and networks as a starting point for joint dialogue on leadership
as a starting point for discussions about roles and responsibilities in cross-functional collaboration
when job descriptions for leaders need to be prepared
